Police Scotland: ‘active inquiries’ after Epstein Balmoral reports
The force said the inquiries were at “a very early stage” and did not say who is being investigated.

Police Scotland has said it has “received information” and that “active inquiries are ongoing”, after reports about the time Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor spent with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire.
In a statement on 30 October, the force said the inquiries were at “a very early stage” and that the needs of “victim survivors” were “at the heart of those inquiries”. It said it would “never confirm details of ongoing inquiries” and that it would be “inappropriate to comment further”.
The statement does not say what the inquiries concern or who is being investigated. Mountbatten-Windsor has previously denied any wrongdoing, and representatives have been contacted for comment.
Epstein, who died in 2019, and Maxwell, who was jailed in 2022 for sex trafficking, are understood to have visited Balmoral with Mountbatten-Windsor. An image released by the US Department of Justice appears to show Epstein and Maxwell at the castle. It is thought to have been taken in 1999.
Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office and later released. A High Court order dated 8 October 2026 recorded that the warrants used in February to search two of Mountbatten-Windsor’s homes were unlawful.
