Christmas 2026 benefit payment dates: when Universal Credit, PIP and State Pension are paid

Benefits and pensions normally due on a bank holiday or a weekend over Christmas and New Year are usually paid on the working day before, GOV.UK says. Going by that rule, a payment due from Friday 25 to Monday 28 December 2026 would arrive on Thursday 24 December.

One due from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January 2027 would arrive on Thursday 31 December. The same working-day-before rule covers Universal Credit, State Pension, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and the other benefits in GOV.UK’s guide to how benefits are paid.

Child Benefit, paid by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), has its own separate set of adjusted dates.

Which bank holidays affect Christmas and New Year 2026-27?

Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December 2026.

Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, so its bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December 2026, as a substitute day, across England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, according to GOV.UK’s bank holidays list.

New Year’s Day, Friday 1 January 2027, is also a bank holiday everywhere in the UK.

Scotland has two more. St Andrew’s Day falls on Monday 30 November 2026, and 2 January, which falls on a Saturday in 2027, moves to Monday 4 January 2027.

Thursday 24 December 2026 and Thursday 31 December 2026 are a calculation from GOV.UK’s rule, not a list GOV.UK itself publishes, so they are worth checking against an online account nearer the time.

GOV.UK’s guide does not say whether a holiday observed only in Scotland also moves payments, so the Scottish row applies the general rule, and no date is given here for payments due on St Andrew’s Day.

Does Child Benefit follow the same dates?

Not always. GOV.UK’s Child Benefit bank holiday table sets its own dates for a payment due on a bank holiday.

A payment normally due on Monday 28 December 2026 is instead paid on Thursday 24 December, matching the calculation above.

Northern Ireland is the exception: a payment normally due on Tuesday 29 December 2026 is paid a day later, on Wednesday 30 December. The table lists no dates for January 2027.

How often is each payment made?

Does an early payment mean extra money?

No. GOV.UK’s rule moves the date of a payment; it does not add a second one.

For Universal Credit, which GOV.UK says is paid on the same date every month, the next payment stays on its normal date, so the gap before it is longer than usual.

What is the Christmas Bonus?

The Christmas Bonus is a one-off, tax-free £10 payment made before Christmas to people getting certain benefits in a qualifying week, normally the first full week of December, GOV.UK says.

It is paid automatically, without a claim, and may show up on a bank statement as “DWP XB”.

Qualifying benefits include:

• State Pension
• Pension Credit’s guarantee element
• Personal Independence Payment
• Attendance Allowance
• Disability Living Allowance
• Carer’s Allowance

GOV.UK’s eligibility list is longer and also names Adult Disability Payment, Carer Support Payment and Pension Age Disability Payment. Someone who has not claimed State Pension and does not get one of the other listed benefits will not get a Christmas Bonus.

Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payment

People born on or before 27 June 1960 could get between £100 and £300 Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2026 to 2027, GOV.UK’s Winter Fuel Payment guidance says. Most eligible people will be paid in November or December 2026, after a letter in October or November setting out the amount.

HMRC takes the payment back from anyone whose total income is over £35,000. It is not available in Scotland, where Pension Age Winter Heating payment may apply instead.

Cold Weather Payment follows the weather, not the calendar. GOV.UK says £25 is paid for each seven-day period of very cold weather between 1 November 2026 and 31 March 2027, when the average temperature in an area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over seven consecutive days.

A payment should arrive within 14 working days of each such period, into the same account as benefit payments. Scotland has an annual Winter Heating Payment instead.

What if a payment does not arrive?

Someone who thinks they should get a Christmas Bonus but has not received it by 1 January can contact the Jobcentre Plus office that deals with their payments, or the Pension Service, GOV.UK says.

For a missing Cold Weather Payment, GOV.UK says to tell the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus. Anyone getting Universal Credit is told to add a note to their online journal instead, or to ring the Universal Credit helpline if they have no online account.
