Universal Credit payment dates 2026: when you’re paid and what happens on bank holidays
Anyone due to be paid between 25 and 28 December 2026 is paid early, on 24 December, because of the Christmas and Boxing Day bank holidays.

Universal Credit is paid once a month, usually straight into a bank, building society or credit union account, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Payment falls seven days after each monthly assessment period closes, and the first payment normally takes around five weeks to arrive from the date a claim is made.
How is my payment date set?
Universal Credit is worked out from a claimant’s circumstances each month, in a cycle the DWP calls an assessment period. The first assessment period begins on the day a claim is made and runs for one calendar month. Payment then lands seven days after that period ends, and the same date repeats every month after that.
The department gives a worked example: someone who claims on 10 September has a first assessment period running to 9 October, with the next one starting on 10 October. They are paid on 17 October, then on the 17th of every month that follows.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| First payment | About 5 weeks after the claim is made |
| Assessment period | 1 calendar month, starting the day the claim is made |
| Payment date | 7 days after each assessment period ends, then the same date every month |
| Weekend or bank holiday | Paid on the working day before |
| Scotland | Payment once or twice a month, by choice |
| Partners | One joint payment a month, unless in Scotland and paid twice monthly |
What happens if my payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday?
If a payment date lands on a weekend or a bank holiday, the DWP pays claimants on the working day before. This December, Christmas Day and Boxing Day’s substitute holiday fall back to back around a weekend. The working day before that whole run is 24 December 2026. A payment normally due on 1 January 2027, New Year’s Day, moves back to 31 December 2026 for the same reason.
An earlier payment of this kind is not an extra amount. It covers the same monthly assessment period; the following payment then returns to the usual date.
Can I be paid twice a month if I live in Scotland?
Claimants in Scotland can choose to be paid once or twice a month. Anyone making a new claim is sent a notification about payment frequency after their first payment; people already getting Universal Credit who have not had that notification can ask their work coach to move to twice-monthly payments.
The same guidance gives an example: a claimant’s first payment lands on 14 December and covers a full month. If they switch to twice-monthly payments, half of the second month’s payment is paid on 14 January and the other half 15 days later, on 29 January. After that, payments continue on the 14th and 29th of each month.
What if I live with a partner?
Couples who both claim Universal Credit get one joint payment a month for the household. In Scotland, a couple that has chosen twice-monthly payments gets two payments a month instead.
Can I get my payment paid differently?
Claimants who need help managing a single monthly payment can ask for an alternative payment arrangement (APA). This can mean rent paid directly to a landlord, payments split twice a month, or a separate payment arranged for a partner. The DWP decides on an APA after a claim has been made and says claimants are more likely to be granted one if they have rent arrears, addiction problems, mental health issues, learning difficulties, or experience of homelessness or domestic abuse.
Where can I check my exact payment date?
The DWP says claimants can see their own payment date and how much they are due in their online Universal Credit account, under the monthly statement.
How often is Universal Credit paid?
Once a month for most claimants, seven days after each monthly assessment period ends, the DWP says. Claimants in Scotland can choose to be paid twice a month instead.
How long does the first Universal Credit payment take?
The DWP says it usually takes around five weeks from the date a claim is made. Claimants who need money before then can apply for an advance.
What happens if my Universal Credit payment date is on a weekend?
The DWP pays it on the working day before, not after.
Will my Universal Credit payment change if I live with a partner?
Couples who both claim get one joint monthly payment, unless they live in Scotland and have chosen twice-monthly payments, in which case they get two.
Can payment frequency be changed?
Only claimants in Scotland can choose between once and twice a month. Anyone who needs their payment managed differently, such as rent paid direct to a landlord, can ask the DWP for an alternative payment arrangement.
