Christmas 2026 benefit payments: dates, bonus and winter help

Child Benefit has its own table of dates, and the £10 Christmas Bonus should be paid automatically before Christmas, according to GOV.UK.

Benefits and pensions due on a bank holiday or a weekend are usually paid on the working day before, GOV.UK says, and two stretches of the winter calendar fall under that rule.

Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December 2026, and Monday 28 December 2026 is the substitute day for Boxing Day, in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, GOV.UK’s bank holidays list shows. New Year’s Day, Friday 1 January 2027, is a bank holiday across the UK.

Scotland adds St Andrew’s Day on Monday 30 November 2026 and a substitute day for 2 January on Monday 4 January 2027.

The second column below is a calculation from that rule, not a list published by GOV.UK. Where the day before is itself a weekend or a bank holiday, the nearest earlier working day applies.

GOV.UK’s guide does not say whether Scotland’s extra holidays on Monday 30 November 2026 and Monday 4 January 2027 also move payments, so no date is given for them here.

Whether a payment falls in one of those stretches depends on each person’s own cycle. Universal Credit is paid every month, State Pension, Pension Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Attendance Allowance usually every four weeks, and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Jobseeker’s Allowance usually every two weeks, according to GOV.UK’s guide to how benefits are paid. The rule moves the payment date and says nothing about extra money.

How do Child Benefit dates differ?

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) pays Child Benefit, and GOV.UK’s Child Benefit bank holiday table sets its own dates. A payment due on Monday 28 December 2026 is paid on Thursday 24 December, and one due on Tuesday 29 December 2026 is paid on 30 December in Northern Ireland only. The table lists no dates for January 2027.

What is the Christmas Bonus?

The Christmas Bonus is a one-off tax-free £10 payment made before Christmas to people who get certain benefits in the qualifying week, normally the first full week of December, GOV.UK’s Christmas Bonus guidance says. People should be paid automatically, without a claim.

Qualifying benefits include State Pension, the guarantee element of Pension Credit, PIP, Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance and Carer’s Allowance, according to the eligibility page. Someone who has not claimed State Pension and is not entitled to one of the other listed benefits will not get a Christmas Bonus.

Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payment

People born on or before 27 June 1960 could get between £100 and £300 for winter 2026 to 2027, GOV.UK’s Winter Fuel Payment guidance says. Most eligible people will be paid in November or December 2026, after a letter in October or November setting out the amount.

HMRC takes the payment back from anyone whose total income is over £35,000. The payment is not available in Scotland, where Pension Age Winter Heating payment may apply instead.

Cold Weather Payment goes to people who get certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest, and the weather rather than the calendar triggers it. The guidance says £25 is paid for each seven-day period of very cold weather between 1 November 2026 and 31 March 2027, when the average temperature in an area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over seven consecutive days. A payment should arrive within 14 working days of each such period, into the same account as benefit payments.

People in Scotland cannot get Cold Weather Payments but might get an annual Winter Heating Payment instead, whatever the weather.

What if a payment does not arrive?

For a missing Cold Weather Payment, GOV.UK says to tell the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus. Universal Credit claimants can sign in and add a note to their journal, or ring the Universal Credit helpline.

Separate guides cover Christmas 2026 benefit payment dates in full, the Christmas Bonus 2026, Winter Fuel Payment 2026, Cold Weather Payment 2026-27, Child Benefit payment dates 2026 and the Benefit payment dates 2026 rule for bank holidays.

When are benefits paid over Christmas 2026?

Payments due on Friday 25 December to Monday 28 December 2026 are usually paid on Thursday 24 December 2026, going by GOV.UK’s working-day-before rule.

Is the Christmas Bonus extra money on top of a benefit?

It is a separate one-off £10 payment for people on a qualifying benefit in the qualifying week, and GOV.UK says it is paid automatically.

Does Scotland get Winter Fuel Payment?

No. GOV.UK says people in Scotland cannot get it but might be eligible for Pension Age Winter Heating payment.
